Javier’s is an upscale Mexican restaurant chain with multiple locations in southern California, Las Vegas, and Mexico. HansonLA is the architect of record for its Crystal Cove, downtown Los Angeles, and Pasadena branches.

The construction of the Javier’s Pasadena branch is a logistical feat. The new restaurant and patio are sited above movie theaters that must remain operational throughout the build. The addition, designed to fit into its Old Town context, includes a two-dining-room enclosure, outdoor seating covered with a metal roof and glass cupula, and live-tree planters. This ambitious project requires both complex structural navigation and coordinated assembly phasing. More than realizing a design, HansonLA is, herein, designing a process.
