About this Project:

  • Scope: Exhibit Design

  • Photo: Douglas Hanson, FAIA

To facilitate a deeper understanding of the California Academy of Sciences Ichthyology collection, containing over two million specimens, the museum conducted a unique survey to find its most important specimens. Douglas Hanson, FAIA, designed an exhibit to showcase the beauty of these exquisitely detailed forms. Over-scaled images of 46 different fish were transformed into luminescent works of art blending the seemingly disparate realms of art and science. The exhibition also included an interactive digital display, gallery guide, and book to provide further understanding of the science of fish.
